Homeowner observations
- Look for new water leakage around the boiler or piping
- Pay attention to new banging, knocking or gurgling
- Notice zones, baseboards or radiators that no longer heat normally
- Keep the boiler area clear and do not obstruct combustion or venting openings
- Make sure carbon-monoxide alarms are installed and maintained as appropriate
Professional boiler service
Depending on the boiler and fuel, service can include inspection of combustion and venting, burner operation, safety and operating controls, system pressure, expansion components, circulators or zone controls, visible piping and overall operating condition.
Oil and gas are not identical
Oil burners and gas-fired equipment have different service requirements. The manufacturer's instructions and the specific installation should determine the maintenance procedure.
Steam needs additional attention
Steam boiler water level, controls, venting and distribution behavior are distinct from hot-water systems. Unexplained water loss or repeated make-up water deserves investigation.
