Understand the principle before the equipment

Residential HVAC systems combine line-voltage power circuits with lower-voltage control circuits. Understanding the distinction helps explain how thermostats can command equipment without directly powering motors and compressors.

Voltage is electrical potential, current is the flow of charge, and resistance opposes current. Electrical power depends on voltage and current.

HVAC equipment also uses switches, relays, contactors, capacitors, transformers and protective devices to start and control components.

Resistance

Contactor and relay

Electrically controlled switches used to operate higher-power loads.

Why It Matters

These fundamentals show up in real HVAC problems

Many service symptoms are easier to understand when you know what the system is trying to do. Pressure, temperature, airflow, heat transfer and controls are connected; a change in one can affect several measurements elsewhere in the system.

Limits of Homeowner Diagnosis

Conceptual knowledge is not a substitute for instruments

Professional HVAC diagnosis may require electrical meters, refrigeration gauges and temperature probes, airflow or static-pressure instruments, combustion analyzers and manufacturer-specific procedures. The Academy explains the concepts without encouraging unsafe internal testing.
