The Refrigeration Cycle

Understand the principle before the equipment

The refrigeration cycle uses pressure changes and phase change to move heat. The refrigerant absorbs heat at a low pressure and temperature, then releases that heat at a higher pressure and temperature.

The compressor does not directly cool the home. It creates the pressure difference that allows the refrigerant to circulate through the cycle and reject absorbed heat outdoors.

The metering device separates the high-pressure and low-pressure sides and controls refrigerant feeding into the evaporator.

Break the concept into parts

Evaporator

Low-pressure refrigerant absorbs heat and boils as air passes across the indoor coil.

Compressor

Raises refrigerant vapor pressure and temperature.

Condenser

Hot refrigerant rejects heat and condenses back toward liquid.

Metering device

Creates the pressure drop and controls flow into the evaporator.

Suction line

Carries low-pressure vapor toward the compressor.

Liquid line

Carries high-pressure liquid toward the metering device.

Why It Matters

These fundamentals show up in real HVAC problems

Many service symptoms are easier to understand when you know what the system is trying to do. Pressure, temperature, airflow, heat transfer and controls are connected; a change in one can affect several measurements elsewhere in the system.

Limits of Homeowner Diagnosis

Conceptual knowledge is not a substitute for instruments

Professional HVAC diagnosis may require electrical meters, refrigeration gauges and temperature probes, airflow or static-pressure instruments, combustion analyzers and manufacturer-specific procedures. The Academy explains the concepts without encouraging unsafe internal testing.
