Start with the symptom, then narrow the cause
The thermostat is the user interface for the HVAC system, but a thermostat symptom can originate elsewhere. A blank display may be a thermostat issue, loss of low-voltage power or an equipment safety opening the control circuit.
A thermostat that appears normal but does not start equipment may have configuration, wiring or equipment-side problems.
Smart thermostats can also introduce power and compatibility requirements that older thermostats did not have.
