The thermostat starts the conversation

A thermostat measures indoor temperature and sends calls to the HVAC equipment when heating, cooling or fan operation is needed. Modern systems may use conventional low-voltage wiring, communicating controls or manufacturer-specific control strategies.

The thermostat does not create heating or cooling. It requests operation, while equipment controls and safety devices determine how the system responds.

A thermostat problem can mimic an equipment problem, but equipment faults can also prevent a valid thermostat call from being completed.

Operating Modes

Settings homeowners should understand

Heat / Cool / Auto

Determines which type of temperature control the thermostat is allowed to request.

Fan Auto

Normally runs the indoor fan when heating or cooling equipment calls require it.

Fan On

Runs the indoor blower continuously on many conventional systems, whether or not active heating or cooling is occurring.

Setpoint

The target temperature used by the thermostat to determine when operation is needed.

Schedule

Changes temperature targets automatically by time or occupancy.

Emergency heat

On applicable heat-pump systems, this setting may disable normal compressor heating and use the configured backup heat source.

Staging

Why some systems have more than one operating level

Single stage

Equipment generally operates at one primary capacity when called.

Two stage

The system can operate at a lower or higher stage depending on demand and control strategy.

Variable capacity

Compatible equipment can adjust output over a broader operating range for comfort and efficiency.

Smart Thermostats

Convenience does not eliminate compatibility requirements

Power requirements

Some thermostats require a common wire or another approved power method.

Equipment compatibility

Heat pumps, multi-stage systems and communicating equipment may require specific wiring or thermostat capabilities.

Configuration matters

Incorrect equipment type, staging or heat-pump setup can cause improper operation even when the wiring is physically connected.

Common Control Symptoms

When the thermostat may be part of the problem

Blank display

Possible causes include thermostat power, batteries, low-voltage power, safeties or equipment electrical issues.

System does not respond

The thermostat may not be calling correctly, or the equipment may be unable to complete the requested sequence.

Short cycling

Control settings can contribute, but equipment sizing, airflow and system faults can also cause frequent cycling.
