Does a Higher SEER2 Rating Save Money?

Reduce the load before chasing a rating

SEER2 is a standardized seasonal cooling-efficiency metric. A higher rating indicates lower electrical input for a given amount of cooling under the rating procedure, but it does not guarantee a specific utility-bill reduction in your home.

Actual savings depend on cooling load, climate, utility rate, annual runtime, existing system efficiency and how the new equipment is installed and operated.

The financial question is the incremental cost: how much extra are you paying for the higher-efficiency option and how long would realistic savings take to recover it?

Equipment efficiency describes how effectively equipment performs under defined conditions. Your utility consumption also depends on weather, thermostat settings, building heat gain or loss, ductwork, system sizing, maintenance and how many hours the equipment operates.

Fix obvious waste first

Before replacing functioning equipment solely for a higher efficiency rating, evaluate low-cost problems such as thermostat schedules, dirty filters, blocked airflow, duct leakage and building-envelope deficiencies. Major equipment replacement should be evaluated on installed cost, expected savings, comfort and remaining equipment life.
