HVAC Efficiency Ratings Explained

Understand common residential HVAC efficiency ratings including SEER2, EER2, HSPF2 and AFUE, and learn what those ratings do and do not tell homeowners.

Efficiency ratings compare equipment under defined test conditions

HVAC efficiency ratings are useful for comparing equipment, but they are not a prediction of a specific home's utility bill. Actual energy use depends on weather, thermostat settings, building load, installation quality, airflow, equipment sizing and operating hours.

Different ratings apply to different types of equipment. Cooling equipment commonly uses SEER2 and EER2, heat pumps also use HSPF2, and furnaces or boilers commonly use AFUE.

A higher efficiency rating can reduce energy consumption under comparable conditions, but efficiency is only one factor in selecting equipment.

Cooling Ratings

SEER2 and EER2 are related but different

SEER2

Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio 2 represents cooling performance over a range of standardized seasonal conditions.

EER2

Energy Efficiency Ratio 2 represents cooling efficiency at defined rating conditions rather than an entire modeled season.

Why both matter

Seasonal efficiency is useful for broad comparison, while performance at demanding conditions can also matter to system selection.

Heating Ratings

Heat pumps and combustion equipment use different measures

HSPF2

Heating Seasonal Performance Factor 2 is a seasonal efficiency measure used for heat-pump heating performance.

AFUE

Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency expresses the percentage of fuel energy converted into useful heat under standardized assumptions.

Different technologies

HSPF2 and AFUE should not be treated as directly interchangeable because heat pumps and combustion equipment produce heat differently.
