Forced-air HVAC equipment can only perform properly when the blower and duct system can move the right amount of air through the equipment and distribute it throughout the home.

The Air Side of HVAC

Your furnace or air conditioner depends on the duct system

Heating and cooling equipment gets most of the attention, but the duct system determines how effectively that capacity reaches the rooms in the home.

Supply ducts carry conditioned air away from the furnace or air handler. Return ducts bring room air back to the equipment. The blower has to move air through the filter, indoor coil or heat exchanger, ductwork, fittings and registers.

If resistance becomes excessive, total airflow can fall. That can reduce comfort, increase noise, affect humidity control and create operating problems for the equipment itself.

Three airflow ideas worth understanding

CFM

Cubic feet per minute describes the volume of air moving through the HVAC system. Equipment performance depends on appropriate airflow for the operating mode.

Static Pressure

Static pressure describes the resistance the blower works against as air moves through filters, coils, ducts, fittings, grilles and registers.

Temperature Change

Airflow affects temperature rise in heating and temperature drop across cooling equipment. Abnormal airflow can produce abnormal equipment temperatures.

Supply & Return

Both sides of the duct system matter

Supply side

Supply ducts carry conditioned air to the rooms. Restrictions, undersized branch ducts, closed dampers, poor fittings or crushed flex duct can reduce delivered airflow.

Return side

Return ducts bring room air back to the blower. An undersized or restricted return can limit total system airflow even when the supply ductwork appears adequate.

Common Restrictions

Where airflow problems commonly develop

Dirty filter

A loaded filter increases resistance and can reduce total blower airflow.

Undersized return

Insufficient return-air capacity can restrict the entire system and increase return-side pressure.

Crushed flex duct

Flexible duct that is compressed, kinked or poorly supported can create substantial resistance.

Dirty indoor coil

Debris on the air side of the evaporator coil can restrict airflow through the equipment.

Closed dampers or registers

Closing too many outlets can increase system resistance rather than improving distribution.

Poor duct design

Long runs, excessive fittings or undersized ducts can make the blower operate against excessive resistance.

Why It Matters

Airflow affects the equipment as well as comfort

Frozen cooling coil

Low airflow can contribute to an evaporator coil operating below freezing, allowing ice to form and further restrict airflow.

Furnace limit trips

Insufficient airflow can allow furnace temperature to rise excessively and open a high-temperature safety limit.

Reduced delivered capacity

Equipment may be capable of transferring heat, but poor airflow can prevent that capacity from reaching occupied rooms effectively.

  • Hot and cold rooms
  • Weak airflow at certain registers
  • Excessive air noise
  • Long equipment run times
  • Poor humidity control
  • Rooms that change temperature when doors are closed
Professional Evaluation

Airflow should be measured, not guessed

A proper airflow evaluation may include total external static pressure, pressure drop across filters or coils, blower settings, temperature rise or split, and manufacturer blower-performance data.

Simply increasing blower speed is not always the correct answer because airflow, noise, humidity performance and duct pressure all have to be considered together.

When Service Is Needed

Airflow problems can affect equipment reliability

If the system is freezing, repeatedly tripping a furnace limit, making unusual blower noise, or delivering very weak airflow throughout the home, the air-distribution system and equipment should be evaluated together.
