Reduce the load before chasing a rating

Duct leakage matters most when ducts pass through attics, crawlspaces, garages or other spaces outside the conditioned envelope. Conditioned supply air lost there does not reach the intended rooms.

Return leakage can pull hot, cold, humid or dusty air into the system from unintended locations, increasing the load on the equipment.

Duct sealing should target actual leakage and accessible defects rather than simply coating every visible joint without understanding the system.

Equipment efficiency describes how effectively equipment performs under defined conditions. Your utility consumption also depends on weather, thermostat settings, building heat gain or loss, ductwork, system sizing, maintenance and how many hours the equipment operates.

Fix obvious waste first

Before replacing functioning equipment solely for a higher efficiency rating, evaluate low-cost problems such as thermostat schedules, dirty filters, blocked airflow, duct leakage and building-envelope deficiencies. Major equipment replacement should be evaluated on installed cost, expected savings, comfort and remaining equipment life.
