New Jersey Homeowner Guide

Heat Pump vs. Furnace in New Jersey

Compare heat pumps and furnaces for New Jersey homes, including heating method, cold-weather operation, efficiency, comfort, fuel source and system design.

Two Different Approaches

Both systems can heat a home, but they do it differently

A furnace produces heat by burning fuel or using electric resistance, then distributes that heat through the duct system. An air-source heat pump uses a refrigeration cycle to move heat from outdoor air into the home.

For New Jersey homeowners, the right choice depends on the home, available utilities, existing ductwork, electrical service, heating load, comfort expectations and the specific equipment being considered.

The comparison should be based on a complete system design rather than the assumption that one technology is automatically best for every house.

Heat Pump

Potential advantages and considerations

Heating and cooling

One refrigeration system can provide both functions.

No onsite combustion for normal heat-pump operation

Standard heat-pump heating does not require a gas flame or furnace heat exchanger.

Cold-weather performance

Capacity and efficiency vary with outdoor temperature, so equipment selection and supplemental heat strategy matter.

Furnace

Potential advantages and considerations

High supply-air temperature

Gas furnaces typically deliver warmer supply air than a heat pump.

Established cold-weather capacity

Properly sized furnaces can provide rated heating output independent of the heat-pump refrigeration capacity curve.

Fuel and venting

Combustion equipment requires fuel supply, combustion safety and appropriate venting.

Hybrid Options

The choice does not always have to be either/or

Dual-fuel system

A heat pump can be paired with a compatible furnace, allowing controls to select between heat-pump and furnace heating.

Existing furnace plus heat pump

Some replacement projects may use a heat pump as the outdoor cooling/heating unit with a compatible furnace indoors.

Control strategy

Economic and comfort results depend on equipment performance, fuel prices and how changeover is configured.
