The Big Picture

Indoor air quality is not one product or one number

Indoor air quality can be influenced by particles, humidity, ventilation, outdoor-air conditions, household activities, building materials, moisture and HVAC operation.

The HVAC system can help manage some of these factors through filtration, humidity control, ventilation and air circulation, but it cannot eliminate every indoor contaminant.

The right approach depends on the actual concern rather than simply adding the most restrictive filter or another accessory.

What an HVAC filter actually does

Equipment protection

One primary job of the filter is keeping dust and debris from accumulating on the blower and indoor coil.

Particle capture

Different filters capture particles with different effectiveness, depending on filter construction and system conditions.

Pressure drop

More filtration is not automatically better if the existing duct and blower system cannot handle the added resistance.

Humidity

Too much or too little moisture affects comfort

Summer humidity

Air conditioning removes moisture as air passes across a cold evaporator coil. Equipment sizing, airflow and run time affect dehumidification.

Winter dryness

Cold outdoor air can become very dry after being heated indoors, which may lead some homes to use humidification.
