What It Can Mean

Start with the symptom, then narrow the cause

Short cycling means the cooling system starts and stops more frequently than normal instead of completing longer, stable cooling cycles.

Frequent cycling can reduce comfort and humidity control and may increase wear on compressors, contactors and other components.

The cause can be as simple as thermostat placement or as significant as a pressure safety or equipment fault.

Possible Causes

Common conditions associated with this symptom

Thermostat issue

Poor location, wiring, configuration or a faulty thermostat can create abnormal calls.

Restricted airflow

Low airflow can contribute to coil freeze-up or operating limits that interrupt the cooling cycle.

Refrigerant or pressure problem

Abnormal operating pressures may trip safety controls on applicable systems.

Electrical component problem

Contactors, capacitors, controls or power quality can interrupt operation.

Oversized equipment

A system with excessive capacity may satisfy the thermostat quickly without long enough run time for even comfort and humidity control.

Dirty outdoor coil

Poor heat rejection can raise operating pressures and contribute to shutdowns.

Do not diagnose by symptom alone

Several different HVAC faults can produce the same homeowner symptom. Proper diagnosis may require electrical readings, refrigerant measurements, airflow testing, static-pressure measurements, combustion testing or control-sequence checks.

Do not bypass safeties, open sealed refrigerant circuits, work on gas piping or perform live electrical troubleshooting unless you are qualified to do so.

  • Cycles are only a few minutes long and the pattern persists.
  • A breaker trips or equipment stops on an apparent safety.
  • The coil freezes or outdoor unit becomes unusually hot/noisy.
  • The system was recently replaced and may be improperly sized or configured.
  • You notice electrical odor, buzzing or failed starts.
